A district mayor in the Andean city of Ayacucho, Peru, was shot to death by Maoist guerrillas participating in a revenge campaign against officials of the ruling American Popular Revolutionary Alliance, police said. Braulio Zaga, 54, was gunned down by Sendero Luminoso (Shining Path) guerrillas soon after leaving home with his wife, they said. The guerrillas have vowed to kill 10 members of the ruling party for every accused rebel inmate who died in the crushing of mutinies in three Lima prisons in June.
