A bill to increase the nuclear power industry’s liability for damages from a reactor accident to $6.5 billion from $660 million was approved by the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee. The higher liability cap is the same as contained in legislation under consideration by the House Energy and Commerce Committee. The nuclear industry won a major victory when the House panel voted, 29 to 13, against a proposal by environmental and consumer groups to make the nuclear power industry liable for all damages to people and property from a plant accident.
