“Shoot Out the Lights,” Richard and Linda Thompson. Hannibal. AAD (analog original). How do you improve one of the most absorbing albums of the ‘80s? Add the purity of CD sound to make these deeply personal, superbly crafted tales of romantic tension and disillusionment seem even more intimate; then include a song that wasn’t on the original 1982 LP. That tune, “Living in Luxury,” is brighter than the rest of the material, both musically (a touch of brass) and thematically (the secret to living in luxury is loving ). Yet “Living” is in keeping with the album’s thoughtful edge and tasteful understatement.
