Barricaded Man Gives Up to Police

A 30-year-old man allegedly shot up furniture in his Garden Grove house, pointed weapons at his wife and mother, and then barricaded himself inside before surrendering Monday, Police Lt. Chuck Gibbs said.

Michael Glenn Howard, 30, walked out of his house at 12700 Volkwood St. shortly after 6 p.m., dropped his shotgun and surrendered to nearly a dozen police officers who had surrounded his house.

An hour earlier, Gibbs said, Howard allegedly fired the .12-gauge shotgun and a 9-millimeter handgun several times in the house--destroying furniture, a stereo and part of a staircase--and pointed the handgun at his wife, Tracy Howard, 26, and at his mother.

Police arrived at the house about 5:40 p.m. Tracy Howard and her mother-in-law were able to get out of the house, but Michael Howard remained inside, Gibbs said. At one point, he tried to escape out a side window, but stopped when he saw police surrounding the house, Gibbs said.

Howard was booked at Orange County Jail on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon, Gibbs said.
