Amtrak trains running between San Diego and Los Angeles were delayed by 15 to 20 minutes Tuesday until a defect in the track could be fixed.

Amtrak spokesman Arthur Lloyd said the Santa Fe Railway, which maintains the track, reduced the maximum allowable speed on the run from 90 to 70 m.p.h.

The speed was reduced after workmen noticed “slight scoring” on the wheels of one train Tuesday morning, indicating that there was a defect in the track. The defect posed no safety concerns, Lloyd said.

Repairmen from Santa Fe were walking the entire length of the track Tuesday to locate the problem, and Lloyd said service should return to normal by today.

Amtrak trains make the two-hour and 35-minute run between San Diego and Los Angeles seven times a day in each direction.
