President Reagan offered some light banter about political extremist Lyndon H. LaRouche Jr. at his press conference Tuesday, seeking to use him as a lever to prod Illinois voters to cast Republican ballots.

Reagan declined an invitation by a local newspaper reporter to characterize LaRouche, an ultraconservative who has charged that the Queen of England is the head of an international drug conspiracy, as a fanatic. “I don’t believe I could find myself in agreement on just about anything he says,” Reagan added.

But, noting that LaRouche followers won Democratic Party nominations in Illinois for lieutenant governor and secretary of state, the President added with a smile that he would advise voters to “play it safe and vote Republican.”
