Heavy smoke hampered air tankers today, but more than 11,000 firefighters using helicopters, bulldozers and shovels gained ground against lightning-caused blazes that have charred 345,000 acres in five Northwestern states.

Crews in hardest-hit Idaho carved a fire line between advancing flames and scores of houses about 40 miles north of Boise. Firefighters in Oregon controlled a series of blazes on grazing land, although forest fires still burned out of control. Showers and lower temperatures helped slow flames in Montana, and the largest fire in Utah was under control.
