Mother, Daughter Fail to Make $111,000 Restitution, Get 180-Day Jail Terms

A mother and daughter were sentenced to 180 days in jail Wednesday for failing to make court-ordered restitution to contractors and former employees of the Wilshire Club for women, which they founded and which closed after a brief life, leaving them charged with grand theft.

Los Angeles Municipal Judge Carol Boas Goodson, who two years ago ordered Jennifer T. Armstrong, 32, and Joan McCarthy, 52, to pay back $111,000 after they pleaded no contest, decreed the jail terms Wednesday because only about $10,000 had been paid so far.

The restitution was the largest ordered in the history of the Los Angeles County Municipal Court. At that time, Goodson suspended 14-year jail terms for the two, placing them on 10 years probation.

Armstrong and McCarthy were also ordered on Wednesday to devote 1,000 hours each to community service.

Goodson gave them until Oct. 30 to begin serving their jail terms because they now live in Sun City, Ariz.
