Beverly Hills : Council Delays Gun Law Stand

Share

The City Council has postponed action on a request by Police Chief Marvin D. Iannone that it oppose a proposed state law allowing individuals to carry concealed weapons.

Mayor Charlotte Spadaro and Councilman Robert Tanenbaum said they wanted more information before taking a stand on Assembly Bill 4058. Iannone had requested that the council send a letter to more than a dozen state lawmakers expressing opposition to the bill.

State law now allows individuals to have guns in their homes or businesses. In a memorandum to the council, Iannone said the proposed law would allow business owners and employees to carry weapons and would require police departments to issue weapons licenses to applicants who can show “good cause” for them.

“Every employee of every store, restaurant, bar, office, or every other place of business in Beverly Hills could legally be armed while in their place of business,” Iannone reported. “(The law) will literally force chiefs of police and sheriffs to issue thousands of licenses that they would not now issue.”

Vice Mayor Benjamin H. Stansbury Jr. and Councilwoman Donna Ellman said they favored sending the letter.
