Hostel Plans ‘Make No Sense’

Share

I wish to express extreme concern and dismay at hearing the latest plan for our once-livable, desirable Santa Monica community.

The establishment of a youth hostel and derelict-care center in the downtown business district of our city, which is very small in area, makes no sense whatsoever.

The property on 2nd Street . . . is much too valuable to be used for a youth hostel charging $4 to $10 per night. There is no way it can be self-supporting.

Why should the taxpayers of Santa Monica subsidize the operation of this hotel, especially on such valuable land with only six parking spaces for 200 people?

If we must have a youth hostel, it would make more sense economically to purchase less expensive land away from the central business district where there is plenty of parking, and also save the taxpayers hundreds of thousands of dollars.
