Biggs Comes Back, Stops Smith After Six

Undefeated heavyweight Tyrell Biggs, returning to action after a five-month layoff because of a broken right collarbone, stopped a game Rod Smith at the end of the sixth round of a scheduled eight-round bout Thursday night at Madison Square Garden’s Felt Forum.

Biggs, 231, the 1984 Olympic gold medalist who had not fought since being injured in a 10-round decision over Jeff Sims last April, was 21 pounds heavier than Smith (10-5),whose corner threw in the towel before the bell sounded to start the seventh round. The victory was the 10th straight for Biggs.

In another fight, 32-year-old middleweight Mustafa Hamsho, 159 1/2, ranked ninth by the World Boxing Council, stopped Richard Burton, 163, at 2:17 of the seventh round of a scheduled 10-rounder. Hamsho is 41-3-2 with 25 knockouts. Burton fell to 12-3.
