Sandona Wins Speedway Scratch Main
John Sandona of Riche Canyon won the scratch main event of the weekly speedway motorcycle racing program Friday night at the Orange County Fairgrounds in Costa Mesa.
A crowd of 4,208 watched as Sandona, who led for the duration of the four-lap race, won the scratch main event for the second straight week. Alan Christian of Huntington Beach was second, Brad Oxley of San Clemente was third and Dubb Ferrell of Whittier was fourth.
Scott Brown of Pomona won the handicap main event, followed by Gary Hicks of Glen Avon, Mark Dwyer of Riverside and Louis Kossuth of La Habra. John Boyer of Claremont won the second-division main and Kelly Inman of Costa Mesa won the third-division main.
In a two-lap, best-of-three match race, Steve Lucero of Riverside defeated Ferrell, 2-1.
Next Friday night’s program will feature the qualification rounds for the U.S. Speedway Championship, which will be held Oct. 11 in Costa Mesa.
