Three Major Categories Added for Landscape Design Contest

Three major categories have been announced for the third annual Southern California Design Awards Program, to culminate with a banquet and presentation ceremony Oct. 17 at the new Alicante Princess Hotel, Garden Grove.

The major categories are: design; planning, research and communication, and student work, according to the co-sponsors, the Southern California chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects and the Landscape Architecture Foundation/California Landscape Architectural Student Scholarship Fund.

The design section of the competition has been divided into 15 sub-categories: community planning, urban design, park, recreational and open-space planning, hotels, motels, inns and like facilities.

Also, multifamily housing, custom residential, single-family residential, commercial, industrial, institutional, historic preservation and restoration, transportation, hardscape, design in wood and mature projects.

Landscape planning and analysis, research, and landscape architectural communication fall into the planning-research-communication category. In this and the design category, each entry must have been designed and endorsed by the same licensed landscape architect.

The student category will be open to students who are currently enrolled in a college, university or extension landscape architecture curriculum.

One Grand Award will be given in each major category to an entry “representing an outstanding advancement of the profession . . . or an outstanding contribution to a better environment,” according to the sponsors’ announcement.

The first-place winner in each sub-category will receive an Award of Merit and the judges may recognize superior accomplishment in any sub-category with one or more Honor Awards.
