SACRAMENTO — The Senate Monday passed legislation directing the Department of Commerce and San Diego State University to study how economic bad times in Mexico affect border communities in San Diego and Imperial counties.
In a 29-2 vote, the bill by Assemblyman Steve Peace (D-Chula Vista) was sent back to the Assembly for concurrence in the Senate version.
“When the peso falls, tourism and trade drops to virtually nothing,” Sen. Marian Bergeson (R-Newport Beach) said before the Senate vote.
The bill appropriates $50,000 for the study and calls for a report to the Legislature by June on policies and programs that might help the affected border communities.
