Manhattan Beach : Council Opposes Drilling

Share

The City Council has approved a resolution opposing oil drilling off the California coast, calling it an environmentally damaging activity.

The resolution, which was supported by four members of the council, urges a permanent ban on offshore drilling and supports action taken in July by the House Appropriations Committee to prevent the Department of Interior from selling oil and gas leases off the California coast before February, 1989.

Councilman Larry Dougharty abstained from the resolution, saying that it would be inconsistent for the city to oppose oil drilling without expressing concern about the pollution caused to Santa Monica Bay by other public agencies, such as Los Angeles’ sewage treatment plant.

Dougharty also urged the city to lobby for a portion of any revenues derived from the leases if drilling is allowed.
