Police say quick thinking saved a restaurant manager being held hostage by an armed man, who was shot and killed by officers answering a robbery report in Hayward. Police said Pat Malan saved his own life by shoving the gunman and diving to the ground as the gunman fanned his weapon at police late Thursday. The gunman, John Camp Jr., 34, of East Oakland, was shot by two officers with shotguns. He was pronounced dead on arrival at St. Rose Hospital in Hayward. Police were called to the scene by restaurant employees who slipped outside after they saw Camp walk in with a handgun.
