Superior Court Judge Earl F. Riley refused to grant a new trial or reduce the $10.8 million in damages awarded to actress Raquel Welch in her case against MGM Studios, which fired her in 1980 during production of the film “Cannery Row.” The ruling came despite arguments by MGM attorney Christina Snyder that the damagers were “grossly excessive and out of whack with reality.” Welch was dismissed by studio officials who complained that she refused to make herself available for early morning rehearsals and took three hours a day to put on makeup and do her hair at home. Her role in the film was played by Debra Winger.
