Pittsburgh Pirate Manager Jim Leyland has been told by the club’s management that he will be back next season, even though the Pirates have the worst record in the major leagues.

“I would have preferred a better record, but he has done an excellent job dealing with conditions as he has found them,” said Malcolm Prine, the Pirates’ president.

Leyland, 41, was given a one-year contract on Nov. 20, 1985 to succeed Chuck Tanner as the 33rd manager in Pirates’ history.
