Ventura County has been awarded a $50,000 grant by the state Department of Health Services to bolster its hazardous waste reduction programs, and the county is contributing another $50,000.

The Ventura County Board of Supervisors voted Tuesday to match the federal grant to provide industries with information on how to control and reduce hazardous waste.

In 1985, Ventura County industries produced 34,000 tons of hazardous waste, according to Don Koepp, director of the Ventura County Environmental Health Department. That amount could be reduced from 25% to 30% with the new program, Koepp said.
