Two Merced firefighters rescued a month-old infant from certain death in a blazing apartment, officials said. The child, Michael Lee, was critically burned and appeared to be dead when he was taken from the blazing two-bedroom apartment, Fire Chief Ken Mitten said. He was revived en route to a Merced hospital and was later flown to a Fresno hospital for treatment of second- and third-degree burns over 40% of his body. “We were told there was a child in the bedroom, so we just got a hose and went in,” said firefighter Paul Fieber, who entered the apartment with his partner, Richard Rowe. The infant’s parents were not at home when the fire broke out and their absence is being investigated, police said.
