In and around Balboa’s Fun Zone, there were already signs forbidding skateboarding, but on summer nights the streets and sidewalks filled with skateboarders, many of them competing to outperform each other.
The Newport Beach City Council decided it had to stop, and the council unanimously passed a resolution forbidding skateboarding in specific areas of Balboa. The action revealed that the signs previously had been posted without any council action making them enforceable.
Armed with the resolution, however, police said they would probably increase foot patrols in the area to cut down on the “sidewalk surfers.”
