Bo Jackson, who came to the Memphis Chicks with great fanfare, slipped quietly out of town before the season ended.

“None of us knew he left,” said George Lapides, president of the Chicks. “He’s not answerable to me. I think the field manager (Tommy Jones), he appeared to be somewhat miffed about it. But the players are not my responsibility.”

The former Heisman Trophy-winning running back from Auburn, unable to play the final games of the Southern League baseball season because of a hamstring pull, batted .277 and hit seven home runs after a slow start.
