Ogygian, making his first start since July 5, held off Mogambo to capture the $167,700 Jerome Handicap by a head at Belmont Park in Elmont, N.Y.
Groovy, handled by Jorge Velasquez, opened an eight-length lead down the backstretch and was four lengths in front leaving the quarter pole before Ogygian and Walter Guerra made their move. Ogygian took the lead heading into the stretch and held off a final challenge by Mogambo.
The victory was the seventh in eight career starts for Ogygian and the $100,620 first prize boosted his earnings to $405,520. Ogygian paid $3, $2.10 and $2.10.
