Now with 18 home runs each, Detroit’s Alan Trammell and Lou Whitaker could become only the third double-play combination in history to get 20 each. The others all played for Boston and included second baseman Bobby Doerr, who hit 22 in 1940 when shortstop Joe Cronin hit 24; hit 27 in 1948 when shortstop Vern Stephens hit 29, and hit 27 in 1950 when Stephens hit 30.

The bullpen’s record for the last two seasons is 30-40. The Tigers have lost 12 games they led in the ninth inning, three on their current West Coast trip.

Milwaukee’s Rob Deer, who was traded by the San Francisco Giants for two minor league pitchers last winter and now leads the American League with 32 home runs, has hit 17 since July 12, a span in which the Giants have hit 20 as a team.

Chris Brown, Chili Davis and Jeffrey Leonard, the heart of the San Francisco Giants’ attack, have combined for one home run and 23 RBIs since the All-Star game. Leonard has been sidelined much of that time after wrist surgery, and Brown is out with a shoulder injury.
