2 Firefighters Hurt in Warehouse Blaze
firefighters were injured battling a warehouse fire that caused an estimated $150,000 in damage early Sunday.
Oceanside Firefighter Matt Reilly and an unidentified firefighter from Camp Pendleton were treated for heat exhaustion and smoke inhalation at Tri-City Hospital in Oceanside, said Hugh Fleming, acting battalion chief.
The fire began in a large pile of wooden stakes behind the Kawano Brothers Inc. building in the 4600 block of North River Road about 4:50 a.m. It spread south into the Schumaker Co. warehouse, which stores cardboard boxes, wooden crates and pallets, Fleming said.
About 70 firefighters and 25 units from Fallbrook, Camp Pendleton, Oceanside, Carlsbad and San Marcos fought the blaze, which was knocked down about 8:30 a.m.
Fleming said several firefighters were on the scene until about 4:30 p.m. Sunday, using skip loaders and bulldozers to spread out and soak the pile of smoldering stakes.
