A Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputy accused of beating a pair of Covina men he had arrested on suspicion of drunk driving pleaded no contest to two counts of assault under color of authority. Edwin Cruger, 31, faces a maximum sentence of three years and eight months when he is sentenced Oct. 23 in Pomona Superior Court, according to Deputy Dist. Atty. Lawrence E. Mason. In exchange for the plea, prosecutors agreed to seek the dismissal of additional charges of false imprisonment and filing a false police report. Cruger was accused of taking Terry Ressler and Daniel David Scott to a parking lot in San Dimas in February, 1985, and beating them with a flashlight. He was suspended from the Sheriff’s Department when charges were filed.
