Steve Sewell Is a Man of Several Positions

This one comes under the heading, “You figure it out.”

In last Sunday’s game against the Raiders, the Broncos unveiled a flea-flicker play that wound up with running back Steve Sewell throwing a pass to quarterback John Elway. The play went for a touchdown.

After looking at the films this week, Bronco Coach Dan Reeves was so impressed that he announced he was making a switch.

Sewell has been moved to wide receiver.

From Dallas Coach Tom Landry, comparing Herschel Walker and Tony Dorsett: “Herschel is unique. He has such great speed and size, and he has a feel for breaking away. Dorsett is a flash runner. Anytime he sees tacklers, he accelerates. Herschel seems to know where the softness is in the other defense. He’s got such great power, he can break through. He’s like Eric Dickerson: If anybody hits him, he’d probably take him in with him.”

Trivia Time: George Musso, Hall of Fame guard for the Chicago Bears, is the answer to what trivia question? (Answer below.)

From Jayson Stark of the Philadelphia Inquirer: “Everybody in San Francisco thinks it’s a great thing that the Giants and the 49ers both have a Roger Craig. Heck, there’s a lot of that going around. The San Diego Chargers traded for a linebacker named Andy Hawkins, meaning both they and the Padres have an Andy Hawkins. Now, if the Rams ever sign an Orel Hershiser, we’d get suspicious.”

Wait a Minute: Missouri Coach Woody Widenhofer, on Saturday’s game against Utah State: “I’ve always had a lot of respect for Chuck Shelton. He’s won everywhere he’s been. They have a new offense and I expect it to be an Air Shelton type of thing.”

Air Shelton was unveiled last Saturday against Brigham Young. Apparently it didn’t get out of the hangar. BYU won, 52-0.

From Limbo Parks, 6-2, 265-pound offensive guard at the University of Arkansas, who is majoring in criminal justice: “I just decided I wanted to do something exciting after college, not just sit behind some old boring desk. I’m a hyper person and I like a fast-paced job. Being a fireman would be exciting, but I do no not like fire.”

That could pose a problem.

Met shortstop Rafael Santana, a native of the Dominican Republic, told the New York Times: “In my hometown, they’ve got cable TV and Spanish-language radio and they follow the Mets’ games every day. Everything I do is well known. People there are crazy for baseball.

“Juan Marichal is still the biggest star from the Dominican Republic. The Alou brothers, too, and Rico Carty. After the Cardinals won the World Series in ‘82, people flocked to the airport to welcome Joaquin Andujar home. Probably the same thing will happen to me this year.”

Trivia Answer: He played football against two future presidents. In 1929, in a game between small Illinois schools, he played for Millikin against Ronald Reagan, a lineman for Eureka. In the 1935 College All-Star game, he played for the Bears against Gerald Ford, a center from Michigan.
