Tennis Roundup : Andres Gomez Leads Advance to Quarterfinals
Top-seeded Andres Gomez of Ecuador advanced to the quarterfinals of a $188,250 Nabisco Grand Prix tournament at Stuttgart, West Germany, Thursday with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Damir Keretic of West Germany.
Gomez is using the clay court tournament as a warmup for the Davis Cup World Group match between Ecuador and West Germany next month at Essen, West Germany.
In other matches, Sweden’s Mikael Pernfors ousted countryman Jan Gunnarsson, 6-3, 6-1; Argentina’s Matin Jaite downed Austria’s Thomas Muster, 6-1, 7-6, and Argentina’s Guillermo Vilas defeated Australia’s Paul McNamee, 6-3, 6-1.
Top-seeded Henri Leconte of France overpowered Jorgen Windahl of Sweden, 6-3, 6-3, to move into the quarterfinals of the $200,000 Martini Open tournament at Geneva.
Leconte needed only 73 minutes to win the second-round match.
At Tokyo, top-seeded Steffi Graf of West Germany beat Akiko Kijimuta of Japan, 6-1, 6-2, in 59 minutes to reach the quarterfinals of the $300,000 Pan Pacific Open tournament.
