A drunk-driving suspect killed by a California Highway Patrol officer was shot in the back, Shasta County Coroner Margie Boddy said. She said Gordon Annis, 49, of Redding, died of a single gunshot wound. Annis was shot by Officer John Murphy, 41, an 18-year CHP veteran, as the officer tried to arrest him in a tavern parking lot near Bella Vista over the weekend. CHP Lt. Les Love said Murphy reported he shot Annis during a struggle. Love said that Annis had wrested away the officer’s baton as Murphy attempted to handcuff him and that the officer feared for his safety. Annis, a construction worker, is survived by his wife and six daughters. No charges have been filed against Murphy. Love said he probably will be given administrative duties pending a sheriff’s investigation.
