South County : Narcotics Unit Will Be Placed at John Wayne
Authorities confirmed Thursday that they plan to put a narcotics enforcement detail at John Wayne Airport.
But Sheriff’s Lt. Richard J. Olson said the Sheriff’s Department hasn’t “worked out the plan at all” yet, and he refused to comment further.
Federal Drug Enforcement Administration officials said the Sheriff’s Department has sent narcotics officers to Los Angeles International Airport for training.
LAX has had a narcotics unit for several years, but authorities say drug smugglers try to avoid detection by using other airports, such as John Wayne.
U.S. Customs officials recently said they were moving into the Newport Harbor area for similar reasons.
