The State : 3 Saved From Fire, Jailed
Trespassing charges have been filed against three people who were rescued from a fire in an abandoned office building in Berkeley that killed four homeless men. Authorities said the one-story building, which housed dental offices before it was abandoned several months ago, had become a refuge for street people, and neighbors said there had been at least two previous fires. The identities of the four victims were not released. The three men in custody remained jailed in lieu of bail of less than $500 each. Deputy Fire Chief Bill Brock said the building’s owners did “everything they reasonably could to secure the building.”
