NCAA Imposes a Double Standard

As the mother of a son who attended college on a football scholarship, I say amen to Jim Murray’s column. The big bucks of TV and pro football have forever changed the sport. Like it or not, college football is big business. Players should be paid as professional athletes. NCAA policies, while well intended, actually make players sweatshop laborers. The unsatisfactory alternative is cheating.

But I take exception to the stereotyped generalization that football players aren’t interested in conjugating to be or learning the properties of hydrogen. Our son’s purpose in getting a scholarship was to obtain a college education. He’s now in the fourth year of medical school.
