As passes go, it wasn’t pretty, but it accomplished what it was supposed to do.

The end-over-end pass from Paramount quarterback Kojuan Williams to flanker Frank Harper covered 32 yards and highlighted a 99-yard scoring drive early in the fourth quarter Friday night as the Pirates beat University, 14-0, at Paramount.

Paramount, considered by many to be a threat this year to Lynwood’s dominance of the San Gabriel Valley League, improved its record to 2-0. University is 1-1.

Leading, 7-0, and faced with a third and 10 from the University 43-yard line, the right-handed Williams rolled out to his left and released the ball. Harper, who had no one between him and the goal line, came back to make the catch at the University 20 and was tackled at the 11. Two plays later, fullback Greg Bryant scored on a two-yard run to cap a 15-play drive with 9:57 left.

The drive began after Pirate nose tackle Charles Garcia stopped University fullback David Liebke short of a first down at the Pirate three on fourth down with 5:29 left in the third period.

University’s deepest penetration after that came when it drove to the Paramount 23 with six minutes left. But on second and 10, Garcia sacked Trojan quarterback Jeff Bailey and University was unable to recover.

A Trojan fumble with 44 seconds remaining in the first half set up Paramount’s first touchdown. Liebke was gang-tackled by the Paramount front four and fumbled at the University 20, where linebacker Javier Ruiz recovered.

Trojan running back Craig Belle was limited to 44 yards in 12 carries. Liebke led University with 103 yards in 17 carries.
