A 23-year-old UC San Diego student died after he was shot during an altercation early Saturday in the parking lot at Alfonso’s Taco Shop in Leucadia.

Greg Toshio Nakatani of Carlsbad and a companion were eating in the patio area of the restaurant about 1:30 a.m. when a car with two men pulled in and parked next to Nakatani’s vehicle, according to a Sheriff’s Department spokesman. As the men got out of their car, one of them struck Nakatani’s car with the car door, and words were exchanged.

The two men then went inside the shop and ordered food. When they came out, more words were exchanged with Nakatani, whereupon one of the men produced a small-caliber handgun and shot Nakatani once in the chest.

The gunman and his companion then fled in a car described by witnesses as a pale yellow Mustang with a license plate 423-ROB, or something similar.
