The Nation : 200 Protest Yale Holdings
About 200 people protesting Yale University’s $400 million in investments in South Africa demonstrated at the inauguration of the New Haven, Conn., school’s new president, and at least three people were arrested. The demonstrators, some wearing white death masks and carrying miniature coffins, shouted, “Apartheid Kills, Yale Pays the Bills” as the inaugural procession for Benno C. Schmidt Jr. marched from Sterling Memorial Library to Woolsey Hall for the ceremonies. A handful of demonstrators later surrounded Schmidt at a reception, but the former Columbia Law School dean continued to greet guests. Yale trustee and former Secretary of State Cyrus Vance was caught briefly among the protesters as police with locked arms pushed the demonstrators away from Schmidt. Vance was not injured.
