Golf Roundup : Barr Holds One-Stroke Lead Over Frost at Milwaukee
Canadian Dave Barr shot a three-under-par 69 Saturday at Milwaukee and took a one-shot lead over South African David Frost entering today’s final round of the $400,000 Greater Milwaukee Open golf tournament at the Tuckaway Country Club.
Frost recovered from bogeys on the first two holes, including a missed one-inch putt on the second, to shoot a 68 and close in on Barr, who is at 202. Included in Frost’s round was a hole-in-one on the 197-yard No. 8.
Frost started the round tied for second with Morris Hatalsky, two strokes behind Barr.
Barr had four birdies as he shot a 32 on the front side but slipped to a 37 coming home.
Buddy Gardner had two eagles in a round of 67, and Joey Sindelar shot his second straight 67 to tie for third place at 204.
Ronnie Black, Tom Purtzer, Corey Pavin and Hatalsky were at 205.
PGA champion Bob Tway, trying to take the PGA Tour earnings lead from Greg Norman, had a 67 for a total of 206.
Lee Elder charged into a three-way tie for the lead with Bruce Crampton and Peter Thomson by shooting a tournament record-matching 65 in the third round of the $200,000 World Senior Invitational tournament at Charlotte, N.C.
Elder had birdies on the fifth, sixth, 10th, 13th and 14th holes, then knocked in a sand wedge for an eagle on 16. Elder birdied No. 17 but bogeyed the final hole to join the two Australians at 209.
Elder’s round tied the tournament record set Thursday by Thomson on the Quail Hollow Country Club course.
Crampton and Thomson, who were tied for the second-round lead, both shot 72s and complained of the heat and humidity.
Three shots back were Chi Chi Rodriguez (71), the leading money winner on the PGA Senior Tour this year, and Miller Barber (72).
Two-time champion Amy Alcott shot a four-under-par 68 to move into a three-way tie for the lead in the $275,000 San Jose tournament at the Almaden Golf and Country Club.
Alcott is tied at 140 with Lauren Howe, who had a 69, and Ayako Okamoto, who shot a 71. Patty Sheehan (70), who won the tournament in 1982, is one stroke back, along with Lisa Young (70).
Leading money-winner Pat Bradley (70) is in a group at 142.
Welshman Ian Woosnam birdied five of the last six holes to shoot a third-round 66 and take the lead in the $195,000 Lawrence Batley tournament at Sutton Coldfield, England.
The 28-year-old Briton, at 209 after three rounds, shot a 31 on the back nine to move one stroke ahead of Philip Parkin of Wales, who had a 69.
Spaniard Jose Rivero was at 211 after a 70, and Ron Stelten, who shared the lead at the halfway point, had a 74 to slip to 214.
