Togo Accuses Ghana of Attack

Commandos from Ghana crossed into Togo and fought with security forces in Lome today in an apparent bid to topple President Gen. Gnassingbe Eyadema, officials said. At least 14 people were reported killed.

A radio report said the commandos were repulsed in a counterattack led by Eyadema himself. Eyadema took power in 1967 in the west African country when he deposed President Nicolas Grunitzky. He was elected to a seven-year term in 1979. The first comment from the Ghanaian Marxist government of Flight Lt. Jerry J. Rawlings was broadcast on Radio Ghana, which made no mention of an attempted coup but said its border patrol personnel had been fired upon by Togo.
