Local News in Brief : Dog-Pound Intruder Gets Probation, Pet

A man accused of attempting to steal a dog from a Chatsworth animal shelter pleaded guilty to trespassing Wednesday in San Fernando Municipal Court--but wound up with the dog.

After spending a night in jail after his arrest Tuesday, David E. Mills, 30, of Northridge was placed on two years’ probation and allowed to keep the 2-year-old boxer he tried to take from the West Valley Animal Shelter.

Mills told Los Angeles police that he wanted the boxer because it resembled his own dog, which was killed by a car in July. Mills used a ladder to get onto the roof of the animal shelter, then climbed into the kennel’s inner court.

He told police that he did not have the $48 to pay for the dog, license and vaccination, and was worried that the pound would kill the animal.

Officers at the Devonshire Division took up a collection to buy the dog for Mills.

“For anyone who went to that much trouble to try to save the dog, it’ll be nice if he got what he wanted,” Detective Sharon Levin said.
