Governor Signs Bills to Curb Drunk Drivers
SACRAMENTO — Several measures to crack down hard on drunk drivers were signed into law Wednesday, including one allowing courts to order installation of interlocking devices to prevent convicted drunk drivers from starting their cars while intoxicated.
In announcing his signature on the bills, Gov. George Deukmejian said in a statement, “Public safety demands that we take serious action to deter drunk driving.”
One of the bills signed into law increases the punishment for offenses linked to drinking and driving. Another raises money for alcohol-abuse education and prevention programs.
Others prescribe alcohol education for drinking juvenile drivers and give local government the authority to sell the vehicle of a convicted felony drunk driver.
