West Hollywood to Require Smoke Detectors in Homes
The City Council has unanimously approved a measure that will require all homes, apartments and single-family condominiums to install smoke detectors by Dec. 31.
A recent survey of more than 18,000 West Hollywood residences indicated that only 32% have detectors.
The ordinance, passed last week by the council, requires homeowners and landlords of all existing units to install battery-powered smoke detectors that have been approved by the state fire marshal. All new structures must have permanently wired detectors.
The law also requires property owners to maintain and recharge battery-operated smoke detectors regularly.
Property owners will be allowed to verify by mail that they have complied with the law. Inspectors from the Los Angeles County Fire Department will spot check at least 20% of West Hollywood’s dwellings to ensure compliance.
The council also ordered the Fire Department to hold public forums to discuss costs, benefits and problems associated with water sprinklers.
