Bassett: Long Day’s Journey for a Loss
Carling Bassett lost on a day she didn’t think she’d be playing.
“I got in from Florida at 2 in the morning (Thursday) and thought I’d have to play Friday,” said Bassett, who lost to No. 3 seed Zina Garrison, 6-4, 6-3, Thursday afternoon in the Audi Challenge at Rancho Bernardo Inn. “I was kind of shocked that I had to play Thursday.”
Garrison relied on her quickness and a strong backhand Thursday. Bassett tried playing serve and volley more than she usually does. But Garrison, using a new racquet she believes gives her more control, was able to keep more balls in play.
In the first match Thursday, No. 2 seed Bonnie Gadusek defeated Elizabeth Smylie, 7-6 (7-2), 6-1. Garrison will meet Gadusek in a semifinal match Saturday.
“I think I made far too many unforced errors,” Smylie said. “And I did not get enough first serves in to enable myself to serve and volley.”
