Bone Disease Forces Pitcher John (The Count) Montefusco to Retire
Pitcher John (The Count) Montefusco of the New York Yankees, suffering from a degenerative bone disease in his hips, announced his retirement Sunday at Yankee Stadium.
Montefusco, 36, pitched 13 seasons for the San Francisco Giants, Atlanta Braves, San Diego Padres and the Yankees, compiling a 90-83 career won-lost record. He was the National League Rookie-of-the-Year in 1975 and pitched a no-hitter against the Braves on Sept. 29, 1976.
He made four relief appearances this year for the Yankees, allowing 9 hits and 3 runs in 12 innings, before being placed on the disabled list May 2.
“I’m in pain every day,” he said. “I knew I couldn’t pitch anymore.”
