Oklahoma starting quarterback Jamelle Holieway will not play Saturday against Kansas State in the Sooners’ Big Eight Conference opener, Coach Barry Switzer said Tuesday.

Switzer, speaking at his weekly media luncheon, said that Holieway bruised his right shoulder in the Sooners’ 28-16 loss to Miami last Saturday in Florida. “We are not holding him out because we are playing Kansas State,” Switzer said. “He wouldn’t play if we were to meet Texas this week.”

Looking back at the loss, Switzer said Miami is one of the best teams he has coached against.

“They are the most talented team in the country, and probably were the most talented team last year,” he said. “They are one of the best teams we have ever faced, I wouldn’t say they are quite as good as the Nebraska teams in the early ‘80s. Miami’s offensive line isn’t what Nebraska had.”
