A 30-year-old man on Wednesday was ordered to stand trial in connection with sexual assaults on eight East County women.

Carlos Antonie Hinojosa appeared before San Diego Municipal Judge Raymond Edwards with two black eyes, chipped teeth and a cut over his cheek. A bailiff said Hinojosa apparently was beaten Tuesday night in County Jail.

The El Cajon resident complained to Edwards that his stomach hurt and he held his face with his hands in apparent pain. The bailiff said Hinojosa had spit up blood earlier in the day.

“I don’t know what happened to him. He doesn’t look too good,” said Deputy Dist. Atty. John Massucco. A Sheriff’s Department spokesman said Hinojosa is now being segregated from other inmates.

Edwards bound Hinojosa over to Superior Court on 17 felony counts--five of rape, two of assault with intent to commit rape, one of forcible oral copulation, eight of burglary and one of assault with a deadly weapon.

Edwards dismissed two counts of rape and two of burglary because Massucco failed to present evidence for them. Massucco declined say why those victims failed to appear.

An El Cajon woman identified Hinojosa on Wednesday as the man who attacked her May 7, 1985, while she was 2 1/2 months pregnant. That assault was not included in the original charges against Hinojosa but will be added later, Massucco said.
