21st Game in Chess Title Match Adjourned
World chess champion Gary Kasparov sealed his 41st move Wednesday, adjourning the 21st game of his title rematch with Anatoly Karpov.
Experts watching the game said that Karpov, who had the advantage of playing the white pieces, appears to have a slight edge in the adjourned position. However, they said the game seems to be headed for a draw.
The two Soviet grandmasters are tied at 10 points. Play is scheduled to resume today.
Kasparov had a three-point lead two weeks ago, then lost three games in a row to Karpov, who held the world title for 10 years before losing it to Kasparov last November.
The 23-year-old world champion still has an advantage in the contest, however, because he will retain the title in the event of a 12-12 tie at the end of the 24-game series.
