Packers Sign Fusina, but Gregg Says They Haven’t Lost Interest in Flutie
The struggling Green Bay Packers signed Chuck Fusina, a former United States Football League quarterback, to a one-year contract with an option Wednesday, but Coach Forrest Gregg said his team isn’t abandoning its pursuit of 1984 Heisman Trophy winner Doug Flutie.
“We saw in Doug Flutie the same thing we saw (at Boston College),” Gregg said. “We have an interest.”
Flutie played his rookie season for the New Jersey Generals of the USFL. He is trying to work out his release from a personal services contract with General owner Donald Trump.
Flutie and Fusina worked out with the Packers Tuesday, as Gregg searched for a quarterback who could move his new ball-control offense. The Packers (0-4) have scored only two touchdowns with third-year pro Randy Wright and veteran backup Vince Ferragamo at quarterback.
Fusina, 29, who played at Penn State, was a backup with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for three seasons before playing for the USFL’s Baltimore/Philadelphia Stars. The Stars won league championships in each city with Fusina at quarterback.
