Singer Sonny Bono and his wife Mary were credited by Palm Springs firefighters with helping to limit damage to the 10-acre compound of actress Suzanne Somers and her husband, Alan Hamel, when a wind-whipped brush fire broke out Thursday evening. According to fire officials in the desert community, Bono and his wife ran from their home a block away and joined three unidentified passers-by in wetting down shake roofs of the main house and several other structures with garden hoses until fire companies arrived. The flames burned across about seven acres, charring walls. The fire was controlled in just under three hours. It was not known whether the Hamels were home at the time.
