Steve Boros’ future as San Diego Padres manager will not be discussed until after the World Series, team president Ballard Smith said Thursday.

Boros’ one-year contract expires when the season ends Sunday.

“We’re going to wait,” Smith said. “Jack (McKeon, general manager) is going off to the World Series, and I’ve got a couple places to go, and I think what we’re going to do is we’ll wait until the World Series is over. It’s been obviously a disappointing year for all of us, and we just need to take a couple weeks and let everybody reflect on it, and then we can decide what the future holds.

“I think everybody just needs to take a step back. . . . Whatever happens will happen in an orderly fashion.”

Boros, whose goal right now is to keep his team out of last place, says he will push to come back next year.

“But, hey, our attendence is down half a million, they have to try to sell season tickets this winter, they’ve got to try to sell radio and television advertising. A lot goes into this decision on who’s managing,” Boros said. “I’ve been in the game long enough to realize that. Still, enough managers have been fired by clubs who are struggling to prove now that changing managers isn’t always the answer.”
