Lack of Decent Bullpen Has Hurt the Dodgers

What happened to the Dodgers in 1986 was no fluke. The cumulative effect of four years of inept decision-making by Al Campanis, et. al., has taken its toll. Because of the 1983 Garvey-Cey transactions, the Dodgers this year played at least six different men at first base, and four different individuals were posted at third.

After the league championship series in 1985, it became clear that the main reason for the Dodgers’ loss to St. Louis was the lack of a decent bullpen. Mr. Campanis answered this dilemma by doing nothing, thus inviting the disaster of 1986, a relief corps that surrendered 35 games to the loss column.

The first positive step for the Dodgers in 1987 should be the prompt termination of Al Campanis as general manager. It is imperative that the organization rededicate itself to excellence and coherence of vision.
