The 12th-ranked Washington Huskies rolled over California, 50-18, at Seattle Saturday for their first Pacific 10 Conference victory of the season, but Coach Don James and quarterback Chris Chandler weren’t satisfied.

“It’s incredible that we got so many breaks,” James said after the Huskies intercepted six passes and recovered three fumbles. But he said he was disappointed in the Huskies’ running game, which accounted for 162 of his team’s 389 total yards.

“Our average yards per run (3.2) was very poor,” he said.

James also was critical of Chandler, who passed for three touchdowns, two to Lonzell Hill.

“Chris had some things that were there but didn’t execute,” James said.

Chandler, who threw two interceptions and lost a fumble, agreed.

“Personally, I played bad enough to lose,” he said.

Cal Coach Joe Kapp said he was “extremely frustrated” with his team’s defeat. “We gave them short fields, so Santa Claus lives,” he said. “We’re the most charitable team in America.”

Chandler, who completed 15 of 27 passes for 193 yards, threw touchdown passes of 43 and 24 yards to Hill and 4 yards to tight end Rod Jones.

“Chandler had a lot of help,” Kapp said. “Hill is a great receiver.”

Washington, 3-1 overall and 1-1 in the Pac-10, bounced back from a 20-10 loss to USC last week. Cal is 1-3 and 1-1.

The Bears played without sophomore halfback Marc Hicks, who injured his knee last week in a loss to San Jose State. His replacement, Oklahoma transfer Chris Richards, was the game’s top rusher with 101 yards in 15 carries.

Stanford 17, San Diego St. 10--The last time Stanford started a season with four victories, it was 1952. Harry Truman was President, and Stanford Coach Jack Elway was still in college.

Although the victory at Stanford didn’t come easy, Elway said: “I never nit-pick a win.”

The highlights were Brad Muster’s 115 yards rushing and Stanford’s defensive showing against a team that had won, 41-22, over the Cardinal last year.

Last year in San Diego, Stanford quarterback John Paye threw a school-record 40 completions in 56 attempts for 385 yards. This time, the Cardinal stayed on the ground, and Paye had only 15 completions in 26 attempts for 162 yards.

“I wasn’t happy this week. I lost some confidence,” Paye said. “I felt a little off with my passes.”

San Diego Coach Denny Stolz credited Stanford’s defense, which held the Aztecs to 39 net yards rushing and 195 yards passing as quarterback Jim Plum filled in for injured Todd Santos.

“Their defense was incredible,” Stolz said. “Our defense played well enough to win. We just didn’t get enough points.”

San Diego (3-2) lost its second game to a Pacific 10 school. UCLA beat the Aztecs two weeks ago.

Washington St. 24, Oregon St. 14--Quarterback Ed Blount threw for 300 yards, and the Cougar defense had five takeaways at Pullman, Wash., enabling Washington State to win its first Pacific 10 Conference game this season.

Those Oregon State turnovers spoiled a 372-yard passing effort by quarterback Erik Wilhelm, who completed 34 of 57 passes.

Blount, who completed 16 of 24 attempts, hit wide receiver Kitrick Taylor on touchdown pass plays of 80 and 43 yards.

Washington State is 2-2-1 overall and 1-1-1 in the Pac-10. Oregon State is 0-4 and 0-2.
